About the Artist, Laura H:
 
Laura H. has been participating in the Healing Arts Project, Inc. – HAPI – since the project started in 2004. She uses bright colors to bring her ideas to life and enjoys putting a lot of detail into her work so that her pictures can tell a story. Her mental health condition can make it hard for her to concentrate and she states that “…I sometimes feel scared and lonely due to my condition, but creating art makes me feel good because I can immerse myself in my art, focus on the present time, and express myself creatively. I feel less distracted and I like that my art can put a smile on people’s faces.”
 
Advice from Laura:
 
“If I had one piece of advice to give to the world, I would tell everyone to love your parents because you only get blessed with two of them.”
 
Who is HAPI:
 
The Healing Arts Project, Inc. (HAPI) exists to fill a gap in recovery and rehabilitation services by providing free art classes taught by professional artists, art exhibition and publication opportunities, and outreach events. These opportunities help participants express and externalize their personal struggles, thoughts, and feelings, which promotes healing in themselves and understanding in the community. HAPI serves approximately 500 individuals in mental health and addiction recovery each year. 90% of participants feel greater self-confidence, comfort in social situations, ability to cope, and sense of self-worth as a result of being involved in HAPI’s artistic programs.
